Mmmmm CARBON... I get asked at least twice a week how I do this effect, so here's the run down. Its dead easy, with the only hard part being getting hold of the matting to do it. The matting is a rubber one that's usually used on top of car dashboards to stop things sliding around. So Auto parts stores are where I used to find it.

| Umm, you might want to find a car to start with. I picked a Mini, surprised?
| | This is the rubber matting. I'm there's other stuff that will work, but this is what I use.
| | I do so many mini roofs that I've got a bit cut to size exactly.
| | I like to mask first with a vinyl tape to ensure a crsip, clean edge. Masking Tape isn't good enough.
| | Now...ummmm...mask the crap out of what's left. Make sure it's ALL covered or you'll regret it.
| | Go around the edges one last time to make sure they're down firmly. Leakage looks really amateurish.
| | Put the matting in place. If you need to hold it down a little better, a LIGHT coat of spray adhesive does the trick. | | I use Tamiya PS23 Gunmetal. Silver looks wrong. Two very light coats is all you need. Subtlety is the key.
| | Resist the temptation to pull the matting off. Leave it at least 20 mins.
| | OK, it's 20 mins now, pull it off and it looks like this!
| | And from the outside....
| | Spray some black on, any brand is fine. Keep the coats light. I usually do about 4 light coats.
| | Job Done!
